Celebrate Halloween & Dia de Los Muertos at CRAFTED

Posted October 15th, 2015

Come to CRAFTED for the “spooktacular” Halloween and Dia de Los Muertos weekend. We have activities planned that you and your friends or family can all enjoy!

Halloween – Saturday, Oct. 31st

11a-3p: Got little ones? Get a head start on the day’s festivities with daytime trick-or-treating (sorry, Vampires). Kids are invited to bring their candy buckets and go shop-to-shop to show off their costumes and see how the CRAFTED artists have decorated their shops and themselves, too!

2p: CRAFTED’s Annual Costume Contest. All ages and levels of creativity welcome. Bring it for all kinds of creative categories, and you just might win a $100 CRAFTED cash prize!

All day: It’s never too late to decorate. Make a miniature haunted houses, paint a candy corn mason jar, weave a spider web or design a candy bag to hold all of the treats you’re going to collect. Your creativity is sure to light up the night. Drop by the Creation Station to participate.

Make a day of it: From 9-11a.m., start your day at the LA WATERFRONT HOWL-O-WEEN PET PARADE. Who says Halloween is just for humans? Dress up your pet and enjoy treats and activity stations along the promenade. Costumes are encouraged, but not required. Parade route starts at Downtown Harbor in San Pedro, then along the Harbor Blvd. Parkway Promenade to the Fanfare Fountain. Pets should be leashed, caged, or otherwise restrained – no exceptions. Donated items will be accepted to benefit the Harbor Area Animal Shelter. This is a free community event brought to you by the Port of Los Angeles.

Adults Only: These limited edition “Mummy’s Drink” cake pops are a grown up treat infused with Vodka and vanilla. Grab a box from Drunken Cake Pops and be the hit of the party tonight. P.S. Check in on Yelp for a special deal.

Dia de Los Muertos – Sunday, Nov. 1st

The celebration continues on Sunday with Dia de Los Muertos! Many of our stores carry fantastic Day of the Dead themed items as well, and some will have altars on display. Two local folklorico groups will also be performing:

12p: Grupo Folklorico Nadino

1p: Folklorico del Mar

All Day:  The Global Gifts UNICEF Store will be hosting a Dia de los Muertos craft at their booth – children can decorate skulls to take home with them.

2-5p.m.: “Fall Fantasy” painting party with host/instructor, Shari Tipich.

Treat yourself to three hours of step-by-step instructions plus appetizers, drinks and wine. You’ll leave with a lovely 16×20 creation on canvas. All materials included; sign up today!

Make a day of it: After stopping at CRAFTED, make sure you head to San Pedro’s annual Dia de Los Muertos Festival, where from 3-9p.m. the streets come alive with art, culture, delicious cuisine and live entertainment. You’ll also get to enjoy performances by groups like the Grammy award-winning, Mariachi Divas.

This weekend is sure to be a spirited one, so come join in the fun!

New Shops in the Market – September 2015

                  Posted September 17th, 2015

Fall is nearly upon us, and we’ve got a great new crop of shops that just opened up! Here’s a sneak peek. Come on down this weekend to shop and meet the new makers.

                  Pop of Color

Pop of Color is surely going to be the place where a lot of shoppers get their next favorite tote or handbag! POC makes multiple styles in a rainbow of colors to compliment your outfit perfectly. Plus, if you put function before fashion, you’ll appreciate that POC bags are made from lightweight materials to lessen your load. They also make a line of throw pillows for bringing their classic style into your comfy spaces.

Indust-Realized is a great new shop full of eclectic finds, from upcycled vintage hubcap lamps to marine-themed marionettes and even sea urchin earrings. Makers and curators Alexandra and John have a vision that blends a downtown aesthetic with coastal influences. Be among the first to get hip to this California trip of a shop!

Take Five with Jenny Gin of Pretty and Perky

                    Posted September 9th, 2015

pretty & perky soaps body products

CRAFTED is always buzzing with activity, so “TAKE FIVE” gives us a chance to take a break and learn a little bit about the artists who make the market great!

1)Tell us about the birth of Pretty and Perky. How did it get started?

Pretty & Perky was born in May under the blue moon of Megatron, when the star of Loki crossed the moon of Han Solo. Ok you caught me… I really don’t have a fancy origin story.

About 16 years ago I watched the movie Fight Club, and along with checking out the sexy sweaty men (there’s no need to pretend like you all weren’t staring), I learned that soap making was just adding a solution of sodium hydroxide to fat. After reading a few soap making books, I drove over to Home Depot, picked up a container of Red Devil Lye, and headed over to the nearest liposuction clinic. I was pretty bummed out because they were not interested in upcycling their fat, so I had to go to our nearest supermarket and pickup a gallon of olive oil. *I’m totally kidding with the liposuction story… they were very nice people.

After making countless batches of weird soap for years and forcing family and friends to use them, I finally improved my skills enough to make stuff that people actually enjoyed. I still remember all of the weirdly shaped bars of soap my poor husband had to use (what a trooper).

Soap making was basically a fun hobby I did for years until 2012 when I decided to step into the world of entrepreneurship.

                    2) What is the best part of being Pretty and Perky?

The best part of making bath, body and home scenting products is being able to create something that you can use and enjoy. It’s like being a chef without all of the added calories.

Stirring the soap cauldron and mumbling mystical chants is pretty awesome too… oh wait did I let that slip out??

                    3) What makes Pretty and Perky unique?

Our products are unique because I try to blend all of the fragrances myself. Having fun and interesting fragrance combinations is sort of our signature.

                    4) What is the craziest lesson you’ve learned while working on Pretty and Perky?

One of the main lessons I’ve learned is to be more flexible in all situations. Whether it’s supplies arriving late, colors not being exactly the same from batch to batch, or even the weather challenging me, I’ve tried to figure out a way to make it work. The language may get a little salty while I’m trying to be “flexible”, but I get it done lol.

                    5) Which product/scent in your line do you most like?

Right now I’m really enjoying our Japanese Mint Loofah Soaps. The soap is very moisturizing because of the shea butter, the built in loofah exfoliates really well, and the mint essential oil leaves my skin feeling tingly. With this hot weather, I’m all about the tingle!
