    “Green” creations by local Artists

    Posted March 9th, 2015

Here at CRAFTED, our favorite shade of green is “up-cycled.” We love it when artists breathe new life into something with crafty ingenuity – after all, we did restore an old warehouse into an arts marketplace! So to put a little CRAFTED spin on St. Patrick’s Day, here are some “green” crafts from the market.

ECF Brings Art & Printmaking Classes to CRAFTED

        Posted March 4th, 2015

ECF Art Centers has joined CRAFTED, offering a great mix of functional and fine art created by student artists from their four centers across L.A. (including the San Pedro location).

The Exceptional Children’s Foundation (ECF) is a non-profit organization founded in 1946 to help children, students and adults with special needs reach their greatest potential. ECF’s art centers foster art making opportunities for their adult students by providing studio space, art supplies and guidance from a staff that specializes in fine arts.

Students work independently on a project by project basis across several different mediums. The ECF Center in San Pedro includes a wet room and kiln for ceramics and a printmaking press.

The skill level varies between students. The artist above has been with ECF for over 20 years and is very skilled at water colors. The artwork sold at CRAFTED comes directly from the students at these art centers. Half the proceeds from the sales go directly to the artist, and the other half goes back into the program to pay for materials.

        Printmaking Classes

ECF is now offering printmaking classes every Friday at CRAFTED!

        Relief Printmaking Class
        Fridays 5-6pm at CRAFTED
        $10 for 3 original prints
Open to all ages and skill levels, all materials and instruction provided.

Craft for Community Tile Mural To Leave Lasting Impression on San Pedro

          Posted March 4th, 2015

In June 2013, CRAFTED at the Port of Los Angeles initiated this CRAFT FOR COMMUNITY project. At our market and at events around town throughout the second half of 2013 and 2014, community members were invited to paint a tile to be assembled into a mural and installed somewhere in San Pedro.

Since then, nearly 300 tiles have been painted, glazed and fired. There’s lots of dolphins and bridges, and San Pedro’s “three-eyed fish” has a fair bit of play – as well as familiar family names, favorite waterfront sites and abstract art. Each tile is handmade, unique and wonderful.

And now with the gracious support of Jerico Development, the tiles will be installed in the breezeway of the Brown Brothers Building where locals and visitors can enjoy them year-round.

Please join us for an opening reception on FIRST THURSDAY, March 5 from 5 to 6:30 p.m.

in the breezeway of the Brown Brothers Building, between 6th and 7th Street, 461 W 6th Street.

Pictures, light refreshments and a free craft to get the fun started this First Thursday!

                Take Five with Lindsay Sochar

                Posted February 26th, 2015
CRAFTED is always buzzing with activity so “TAKE FIVE” gives us a chance to take a break and learn a little bit about the people who make the market great!

Lindsay Sochar is a true CRAFTED Original – she’s been with us since day one and eventually joined the staff as our Craft Program Manager. Every team has that one special person who inspires the rest, and Lindsay keeps us all on our creative toes. She manages the Creation Station, where she can leads visitors through a different DIY project each weekend that they can take home as a memento from CRAFTED. That’s why she’s our first Take Five subject.

                1. What is your earliest crafting memory?
Hot gluing in my mom’s garage.

                2. What do you do when you’re not at CRAFTED?
When I’m not creating in the market, I’m either at home working on my own artwork or I am at school. I’m learning the ancient art of hand painted signs. So I spend a lot of my time practicing, painting and working on commissions. I also create cardboard playhouses for my cats.

                3. What is your favorite medium to work in?
I do most of my work painting in acrylic; it’s vibrant and dries quickly. I have learned how to get acrylic paint to do exactly what I’m looking for. But my favorite medium is clay. My love for clay comes from my father who is a sculptor and great teacher. Working with clay is very forgiving and extremely tactile. I like how interactive and physical using clay can be. It’s such a beautiful material and scientific process. Clay is an organic material and glazes are natural chemicals that react to heat to produce different color reactions.

                4. Where do you get your ideas for the Creation Station craft projects?
A lot of the projects I do in the Creation Station are things I would be at home making. I do find a lot of ideas online, on Pinterest and on craft-related blogs. But most of my craft inspiration comes from seeing something I like and wanting to make my own version.

                5. What’s your favorite Creation Station moment?
Some of my favorite moments at the Creation Station are when people see a few kids happily making crafts and say, “OH! look how happy they are – I wish we could do that.” When I tell them there’s no age limit to creating and having fun and they join in, it makes my day.

Some of the kids who are most excited by the crafts are the ones whose schools no longer offer arts in the classroom. Being creative is an essential part of growing and learning. It’s amazing what kids can think of and create when given a place to do so.

                Come Craft with Lindsay!

Lindsay has some fun craft projects planned for the Creation Station in the coming weekends. And remember, the Creation Station is a place for creatives of ALL ages to get crafty!!
