Visit with Unsustainable Creatures artist Cynthia Minet on First Thursday

            Posted June 30th, 2016

            Ox_FirstThursday

CRAFTED will be open from 4-8 on July 7 for San Pedro’s First Thursday event, and this month you can visit with artist Cynthia Minet, the sculptor behind the Unsustainable Creatures exhibit on view at CRAFTED through 2016.

The Ox, Elephant, Camel and Pack of Dogs on display at CRAFTED, all life-size sculptures, are made from post-consumer plastics, PVC and LEDs.  Cynthia Minet’s sculptures, drawings and installations stem from her interests in scientific and ecological issues, and her work often prompts viewers to ponder the complicated roles that plastics, consumer culture, and electricity play in our lives.

Her artwork has been presented in solo shows in Southern California at USC, UC Riverside, and CSUN, as well as a solo installation in the Los Angeles International Airport. In addition to group shows nationally, Minet has presented her work internationally in Italy, Israel, Denmark, and Belarus.  Her next major project is a commissioned solo installation for the International Museum of Art and Science in McAllen, TX, forthcoming in March 2018.

In addition to her career as an established artist, Minet is currently a professor at Moorpark College in Southern California and she has also taught in Rome, Italy and in Guadalajara, Mexico. Come by and chat with her about her work and enjoy an artist-led tour, shop the market, enjoy a beer and take the trolley up to the First Thursday events in Downtown San Pedro!  The parking gates will be open until 10 p.m.

              Fourth of July Fun!

              Posted June 30th, 2016

              FourthofJuly600x300

Spend part of your holiday weekend here with us!  There’s lots of fun things to do and Brouwerij West has special hours on Monday, July 4 – 2 to 10 p.m.!

The weekend begins with Cars and Stripes Forever, a pre-Independence Day celebration sponsored by the Port of Los Angeles with a car show featuring more than 100 classic cars, live bands, food trucks, beer garden, and a grand fireworks finale.  Stop by early and leave your car here – the trolley will take you to the event and you can leave your car here until 11 p.m.!

Shop the market Friday-Sunday 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. for fun summer finds – here’s a few of our Fourth favorites:

Plus – it’s Tie Dye Weekend!  Our most popular hands-on craft – for $10 you can tie dye a plain white shirt that we provide, or you are welcome to bring your own item.  It must be 100% cotton.

Did you know the massive Korean Bell of Friendship located just up the hill from CRAFTED is rung every year on the Fourth?  Join us at 10:30 a.m. at the Korean Bell for this moving celebration of freedom and friendship hosted by the San Pedro Chamber of Commerce.  Then, head on over to Brouwerij West – the brewery will be open from 2-10 p.m. on Monday, July 4.  PEACHES’ SMOKEHOUSE & SOUTHERN KITCHEN is scheduled to be servin’ up some American eats and we are pretty sure you’ll be able to see the Cabrillo Beach fireworks from the back dock!

                  Elephant800x600

We are thrilled to have on exhibit an CRAFTED selected works by Cynthia Minet, Unsustainable Creatures.  Each life-size sculpture is made from post-consumer plastics, PVC and LEDs.

The elephant shown above is the largest of the sculptures commissioned by the LA Dept. of Cultural Affairs and the Los Angeles World Airports for a solo installation in the Tom Bradley International Terminal, April-September 2013.  Tour around the market to find Camel, Ox and the Pack Dogs.

Cynthia Minet’s sculptures, drawings and installations stem from her interests in scientific and ecological issues. Made from translucent post-consumer plastics and LEDS, her work often prompts viewers to ponder the complicated roles that plastics, consumer culture, and electricity play in our lives. She constructs anatomically accurate life-scale domesticated animals, and intends them as surrogates for humans, presenting human nature via the animal.

Cynthia Minet was born in New Jersey, raised in Rome, Italy, and is based in Los Angeles. She holds an MFA in Sculpture from San Francisco State University, and a BA from UC Santa Barbara. Currently a professor at Moorpark College in Southern California, she has also taught in Rome, Italy and in Guadalajara, Mexico.

Features and reviews have appeared on The Discovery Channel(Canada), Wired Magazine, the Los Angeles Times, KCET ArtBound, Artillery Magazine, FORM Magazine, the Anchorage Daily News, RAI Television, (Italy), The Huffington Post and on numerous websites.

Her next major project is a commissioned solo installation for the International Museum of Art and Science in McAllen, TX, forthcoming in March 2018.
